On the occasion of the ten-year jubilee of the ZKM | Karlsruhe in “Hallenbau A” of the former IWKA industrial plant Karlsruhe-Augsburg, with the installation of YOUbiläums Browser the history of the ZKM between 1997 and 2007 becomes a space pervading interface: by means of the Linear Navigator designed by Jeffrey Shaw in 1999, the visitors are able to call up video documentation on selected exhibitions and productions of the house. The mobile screen newly implemented on a mounted, eleven meter long track provides a view, chronologically arranged view of ZKM highlights. Based on their own selection, the visitors, stepping backwards and forwards in time, can interactively and individually experience and the productions and themes of the ZKM for the first time. Jeffrey Shaw (*1944, Melbourne) founding director of the ZKM | Institute for Visual Media and the Cinema Research Center, Sydney (AUS). The artist counts among the pioneers of interactive media art. Since the 1960s Shaw has been creating intermedial participative environments with immersive pictorial strategies.
Peter Weibel (*1944 in Odessa) In addition to his activity as an artist and curator, he became internationally recognized through his writings on art and media theory. Weibel has taught at numerous universities in Austria, Germany and in the USA and, in 1989, founded the Institute for New Media in Frankfurt/Main. As Art Director of Ars Electronica in Linz, which curated the Austrian contribution to the Venice Biennale from 1993 to 1999, he has been director of the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe since January 1999. He received the title of Honorary Doctor of the University of Art and Design Helsinki in January 2007.
